Kirtan is a meditative and energizing practice of devotional call-and-response singing. The repetition of the phrases combined with the back-and-forth nature of this group song soothes the mind, creates community, and fosters an awareness of something greater than one's individual self.
One of New England's newest devotional music groups, Heart Centered Kirtan is an eclectic collection of Pioneer Valley, MA, folks dedicated to offering an accessible pathway into the mysteries of the heart. In our modern adaptation of this traditional practice, we weave Sanskrit hymns, prayers and inspirational texts from ancient India into our own original blend of rock, folk, blues, and reggae. The core of the band is wallah Libby Volckening (harmonium/vox) with James Robinson (guitar/vox), Amanda Turk (percussion), and Melissa Stevens (vox). They are joined by a rotation of seasoned area musicians.
Everyone is welcome. Our kirtans are informal, accessible and inspirational. You don’t need to be a great singer or know any Sanskrit to enjoy Kirtan. Come sing, dance, or just listen -- and let the music clear your mind and soothe your heart.
